

Sure, all the levels are expertly designed, and are mostly meant to give players some inspiration for levels they might want to make themselves, but I think it would be much cooler if the story mode made use of the course creator, with challenges around maybe using a limited number of tools to build a whole level. The only real down side to the whole thing is the lack of the use of the course creator in Super Mario Maker 2’s story mode. In fact, I’ve ever seen a spin on a survival horror level thanks to clever use of Mario Maker 2’s sound effects. There are a lot of tools to play with here, from simple level-creation stuff to even sound effects and music. If you haven’t already guessed by the game’s name, the course creator is Super Mario Maker 2’s main star. From the moment you start the game, you have the friendly pigeon Yamamura there to helpfully explain the various facets of the game’s creation tools, as well as general game design ideas and even Mario’s moves that you should account for when making a course. And a lot of it comes down to just how friendly Super Mario Maker 2 feels right from the outset. It manages to somehow strike the perfect balance between having a lot of options for basically any kind of 2D Mario level you can think of, while at the same time being incredibly accessible and intuitive, even for non-gamers.
